Dates And Times In Excel

Many, if not most, Excel workbooks make some use of dates and times. By understanding how Excel stores dates and times, you can better understand how to work with these values.

Excel stores dates and times as simple numbers. A date is represented by the number of days since 0-Jan-1900. The value 1 corresponds to 1-Jan-1900, 2 corresponds to 2-Jan-1900, up through 39894 corresponding to 22-March-2009. The minimum date that Excel can use is 1-Jan-1900 and the maximum date is 31-December-9999. A time in Excel is represented by a fraction of a 24-hour day, so 0.25 = 6:00:00, 0.5 = 12:00:00, and 0.75 = 18:00:00. By combining the date and time values, any date and time can be stored in a number of the Double or Date type. For example, 22-March-2009, 18:30:00 is stored as 39984.77083.

Since dates and times are simply numbers, you can perform calculations on them.
